Downloading

1. Download AIM 4.0.972 from here: Download Info
2. Download Super ResEdit 2.1.3 from here: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/super-resedit-213

Installing

1. Install AIM
2. Install Super ResEdit 2.1.3

Patching

1. Open the AOL Instant Messenger binary in Super ResEdit
2. Double-click STR#
3. Double-click ID 1002
4. Change login.oscar.aol.com to aim.chivanet.org
5. Click File and then Save on the menu bar
6. Click File and then Quit on the menu bar
7. Start AIM as normal
