Using Pidgin

To use Pidgin with AIM on ChivaNet on Linux, follow these steps (you will need cmake, gcc, and the libpurple-dev libraries):

  1. Install Pidgin from your distribution's repositories
  2. Download AIM Plugin for Pidgin (Source) here: Download Info
  3. Extract like so:
    $ tar xzf chivanet_aim_pidgin.tar.gz
  4. Build and install using these commands:
    $ cd ChivanetAimPidgin
    $ cmake -DPurpleDir=./purple-config.cmake -S oscarprpl/
    $ cmake --build .
    $ sudo cmake --install .                                       
    
  5. Launch Pidgin
  6. At the Welcome to Pidgin! screen, click Add...
  7. Make sure AIM is selected in the Protocol field
  8. Enter your screen name in the Username: field and your password in Password:
  9. Click the Advanced tab
  10. Make sure the Server field says aim.chivanet.org
  11. Set the Connection security: field to Don't use encryption
  12. Set the Authentication method: field to MD5-based
  13. Uncheck Allow multiple simultaneous logins
  14. Click Add
