Article KB-00231 - Finding Public Chat Rooms on AIM

Applies to: Retro AIM Server - General

Created by Serena (she/her) on Jan 28, 2025

Problem

You want to join a public chat room on ChivaNet, but you aren't sure how.

Solution

Try one of these methods:

Method 1: ChivaNet Bot

You may want to find a group to chat with. Follow these steps:

  1. Click the IM button in the Buddy List window (left side, just below your buddy list)
  2. In the Instant Message window, there's a To: box. Type ChivaNet in the box
  3. Type help in the message window, and press ENTER
  4. The bot will respond with pertinent instructions

The General chat room is the most active. To join it right away, just send join General to the ChivaNet user.

Method 2: AIM Today

If you're using AIM for Microsoft Windows and have configured the hosts file workaround, click My AIM -> AIM Today... in the menu bar of your buddy list window. Click one of the chat room links.

Method 3: ChivaNet AIM Directory

Visit the ChivaNet AIM Directory at https://chivanet.org/aim/directory.cfm and click one of the chat room links.

Note that this method may not work in modern operating systems!

Method 4: Pidgin

If you're using Pidgin:

  1. Click Buddies -> Join a Chat... in your Buddy List window
  2. Enter the name of the chat room you want to join in the Room: field (you can find a list of valid room names at https://chivanet.org/aim/directory.cfm)
  3. Set the Exchange: field to 5
  4. Click Join
