ChivaNet shell accounts allow you access to a UNIX-like terminal interface, as well as providing mail and newsreaders and personal web hosting services.
Once this is done, simply point your SSH client at mail.chivanet.org and log in with your mail account credentials.
Shell Account Features
This server includes many editors, compilers, and interpreters, as well as personal web hosting.
Personal Web Hosting
To use personal web hosting, create a public_html subdirectory in your home directory, and create HTML content within. The base URL for your website will be http://web.chivanet.org/~<your-username>, where [mono]<your-username>/mono] is the username with which you log into your mail account.
The default page can be named index.html for standard HTML, index.shtml for use with Apache SSI (server-side includes), or index.php for PHP.
To use CGI scripting, you will need to create a cgi-bin subdirectory within ~/public_html. Scripts can be written in Perl (the location of Perl is /usr/pkg/bin/perl and must have the execute bit set.
Note that ChivaNet staff cannot teach you how to write HTML, CSS, or Javascript. There are plenty of YouTube videos and other online resources, as well as books, that can do this job. Web hosting services are strictly as-is, and no technical support will be provided.
Size Limits
Your shell account has a quota allowing you to use approximately 30-40MB of storage. We ask that you not use this storage to back up personal files or distribute content of an illegal or adult-oriented nature.
