Article KB-00321 - Using QuickBuddy

Applies to: Retro AIM Server - Clients

Created by Serena (she/her) on Feb 27, 2025

What is it?

QuickBuddy is an AIM client implemented as a Java applet. It can be useful on systems with Java support where you cannot or do not wish to install a native AIM client.

Preparing Your System

You will first need to install the following:

  • Web browser capable of supporting the Java plugin (such as Firefox 52.9.0 ESR)
  • A sufficiently old Java runtime (we recommend Java 6u45)

Browser

Many retro systems will probably have a browser already capable of running QuickBuddy. If this is the case, you can stop reading.

If you receive a warning saying Java Not Detected when attempting to run QuickBuddy, you will need to continue reading this document.

The plugin format used by the Java runtime is supported in Firefox 52.9.0 ESR and older. We recommend running Firefox 52.9.0 ESR where possible, though QuickBuddy has also been tested in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.

We do not provide technical support for browser installation.

Java

We recommend the Java 2 Runtime Environment 6u45. Visit https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/javase-java-archive-javase6-downloads.html to download a version for your OS.

We do not provide technical support for Java.
