Article KB-00232 - Error: The AIM service can't be reached

Applies to: Retro AIM Server - Clients

Created by Serena (she/her) on Jan 28, 2025

Problem

When attempting to connect to ChivaNet AIM, you get a message similar to The AIM service can't be reached.

This can be caused by any of these problems:

AIM client misconfigured

In general, your client needs to connect to aim.chivanet.org on port 5190.

Network problem

This can be caused by problems with your network, access point, router, or ISP.

If you can connect to other sites, but not ChivaNet, your problem is likely a banned account.

If you cannot connect to any Internet sites or services, try power-cycling your router. If that fails to rectify the issue, contact your Internet service provider.

Account banned

If you can connect to all other services besides ChivaNet, it is likely that you have been banned from ChivaNet. This can occur due to violations of the Terms of Service (see KB-00067 - Terms of Service). You will not be able to correct the error.

Please note that attempting to circumvent or bypass a ban of this type--whether by creating alternate accounts or otherwise--is itself a violation of the Terms of Service.
